If you run trucks for a living, wheel alignment is one of those maintenance items that quietly saves — or costs — you thousands of dollars a year. A truck with an out-of-alignment steer axle chews through a set of front tyres in a fraction of the expected life, drags on fuel economy, and puts your driver in a vehicle that pulls to one side under load.

Here are five of the most common signs a truck in your fleet is overdue for a professional heavy-vehicle wheel alignment.

1. Uneven or feathered tyre wear

If a tyre is worn on one shoulder more than the other, or the tread is showing a saw-tooth “feathered” pattern, the wheel is not tracking straight. Feathered wear is almost always an alignment issue rather than a tyre-pressure problem. Ignoring it means you buy the tyre a second time, months earlier than you should.

2. The truck pulls to one side on a straight, flat road

A quick test on the M5 or Hume: on a level stretch, take a light grip on the wheel. If the truck drifts left or right without input, something is out. It might be tyre pressure, but if pressures are correct, it is an alignment or suspension geometry issue.

3. Steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight

If the wheel sits crooked while the truck is going straight, the toe setting is wrong on the steer axle. This gets worse over time as the driver instinctively compensates.

4. Vibration through the wheel at highway speed

Vibration usually shows up between 80–100 km/h and disappears again above 110. That range points at a wheel-balance or alignment fault, not an engine or driveline issue. Cheaper to catch early than after it damages hub bearings.

5. New tyres wearing faster than the last set

Fitting a fresh set of steers and finding them half-worn at 40,000 km when the previous set lasted 80,000? That is a classic alignment symptom — the new rubber is being scrubbed off by the geometry of the axle, not by mileage.

What happens if you keep driving on it

Short version: you burn tyres, you burn diesel, and eventually you damage kingpins, hub bearings, or springs. Worst case, an out-of-alignment steer axle at freeway speed under load is a real safety issue. Correcting alignment early — before it becomes an axle-out correction — is usually a fraction of the cost of the parts damage it prevents.
